Fredrick Barton, MD
Dr. Barton is a radiation oncologist with extensive experience in the treatment of a wide range of malignancies. He treats all adult malignancies where radiation therapy plays a role. He is currently the only radiation oncologist in Lake County offering treatment for head and neck cancers. He also has a special interest in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer, breast cancer and lymphoma. He routinely sees patients from Lake, Cuyahoga, Geauga and Ashtabula counties. Dr. Barton works for University Hospitals of Cleveland and sees patients exclusively at the Lake Hospital/University Hospital Seidman Cancer Center in Mentor Ohio
Dr. Barton is from Northeastern Ohio. He graduated from the University of Akron in 1981 and has a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology. He received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1989. He served in the United States Air Force from 1993 to 1997. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Major. He and his wife live in Lake County, and are proud of their four children and four grandchildren.
Dr. Barton’s approach to the treatment of cancer is based upon ethics and science. “Every patient is different and every treatment program must be custom-designed to meet the medical, emotional, and social needs of the patient and their family”, says Dr. Barton. He is proud to be able to offer university-level cancer care in the community, and provide his patients with top quality cancer care without the hassles and hardships of driving downtown. He enjoys educating his patients about nature of their disease, treatment options, and side effects.
Maria Espinosa, MD
Dr. Espinosa’s special medical interests include early detection of cancer, cancer risk, breast cancer, oncology, and hematology. Board certified, she works in our Medical Oncology Department. She received both her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines in 1983. She then interned in Internal Medicine at both the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and St. Vincent Charity Hospital/St. Luke’s Medical Center in Cleveland. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and in Internal Medicine at St. Vincent Charity Hospital/St. Luke’s Medical Center. In addition, she completed a clinical fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at University Hospitals of Cleveland in 1996.
Louis J. Novak, MD
Dr. Novak is our Director of the Radiation Oncology Department. His special medical interests include community oncology and clinical trials. He is board certified, and was named one of US News and World Report’s “Top Doctors.” In January 2012 Dr. Novak was selected to represent the Cleveland community in the 2012 edition of Biltmore’s Who’s Who Among Executives and Professionals, for his commitment to and influence in the profession. Dr. Novak earned his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1970. He conducted his internship in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center of Cleveland. Dr. Novak completed residencies in diagnostic and therapeutic radiology at University Hospitals of Cleveland, where he also completed a fellowship in clinical oncology in 1976.
Joel Saltzman, MD
Dr. Saltzman is currently Director of our Medical Oncology Department and has special medical interests in gastrointestinal cancer, prostate cancer, and clinical trials. He is board certified. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Miami University and went on to receive his medical degree from The Ohio State University in 1997. He did his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland. He continued with his fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at University Hospitals of Cleveland in 2003.
Ila Tamaskar, MD
Dr. Ila Tamaskar is board certified in internal medicine and internal medicine-medical oncology. She obtained her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Grand Medical College in Bombay, India, graduating in 2000, and did her residency at Huron Hospital in Cleveland. She completed a research fellowship in Oncology Experimental Therapeutics at the Cleveland Clinic as well as a fellowship in Medical Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York.
Willem van Heeckeren, MD, PhD
Dr. van Heeckeren earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees from Case Western Reserve University, graduating in 2002. He then went on to do his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland. He completed his fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at University Hospitals of Cleveland in 2007. Dr. van Heeckeren also earned a doctoral degree in genetics from Harvard University. Board certified, he is one of the staff in our Medical Oncology Department, with special interests in benign hematology and hematologic malignancies.
